The Sea Ice Marathon Weekend offers you the opportunity to experience fantastic winter activities in addition to your participation in the unique race on the frozen sea.

General information

Sea Ice Marathon Weekend offers you a unique running event combined with a weekend in our winter wonderland. You get the unique opportunity to run on the frozen sea, which is internationally known for its fantastic ice track. Your weekend package includes a Northern Lights hunt where we go out by car into the night to look for the beautiful Northern Lights.

But it's not just the race and the northern lights that attract you. You can take a nice walk through Luleå city center, which offers a variety of restaurants with local menus, or why not enjoy a typical Swedish fika at one of our cozy cafes.

Another attraction is located just outside Luleå city center, Gammelstad church town. The church town has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. You can experience this beautiful and unique world heritage site with or without a guide.

Do you want to customize your holiday? You can adjust this package by selecting the following:

Book a 1-hour dog sled tour where a guide drives you in the traditional manner of transfer through the white winter landscape. From SEK 1700 extra per person. The whole activity is between 1.5-2.5 hours and coffee is included.
Snowshoe hike 2 hours. SEK 1000 extra per person.
Meet moose and reindeer. Price on request.

Agenda

Day 1

On arrival at Luleå airport, you will be welcomed by one of our guides, who will then drive you to your accommodation in the centre of Luleå. After checking in to your hotel, the rest of the day is free to explore the city. You can stroll through the streets, settle down in a cozy cafe and have a fika or check out one of the many restaurants.

In the evening at 8 p.m., it's time for your Northern Lights hunt by car.
Your guide will pick you up at Kulturens Hus in central Luleå (at 8 p.m.) and then we'll set off on a hunt to see the beautiful northern lights. Make sure you are at Kulturens hus a few minutes before 20:00, so we can leave on time.

To be able to capture this mythical lights, we must be outside on clear evenings. With good conditions, we have great chances of catch the northern lights. But even if the conditions are not that good, there is a chance to capture them as we are out with a car. Thus, we have a large radius for the hunt and the possibility to get away from the clouds. Your experienced guide will assess the aurora activity as well as the weather conditions before the start of the tour. With this information, the most optimal decision is made about the hunting trip.
During the three hours you will go to at least three different places if you don't catch the Northern Lights directly. If you are lucky and see the dancing lights, it is time to take many nice pictures and enjoy a Swedish fika (something sweet to eat and hot to drink). During the tour the guide will tell you more about the Northern Lights, the magic behind it and the myths surrounding it.

Day 2

After enjoying a varied breakfast buffet, you will eventually take the short walk to Södra Hamnplan. Here you will be greeted by a wonderful atmosphere with many enthusiastic runners who are all equally looking forward to today's experience. This race, which takes you many kilometers on the frozen Baltic Sea, is a unique race that cannot be found anywhere else in the same way. If the sun is shining, you will get spring feelings from all this light even though it is winter and you are surrounded by ice and snow.

After completing your race, it will be time for relaxation. The hotel's spa will await you to reward your muscles after the effort on the ice road.

Day 3

After a wonderful weekend in Luleå, it's time to head home. If you have a few hours left before the trip home, why not book one last activity. Maybe a snowshoe hike? Or go ice fishing. There's so much more to experience up north, for more inspiration and booking, see our homepage.

If you have an early flight, it's time to get ready and check out of your hotel. One of our guides will drive you to the airport and we wish you a pleasant journey home.
